FreeBSD is a free UNIX-like operating system descended from the original BSD UNIX distribution initially developed by the Computer Systems Research Group at the University of California, Berkley in 1977. FreeBSD assumed development in 1993 and its code base serves as the foundation upon which Apple later built Mac OS X and iOS (used for the iPhone and iPad) as well as other projects such as FreeNAS, PC-BSD, and m0n0wall.
I began using FreeBSD as a workstation and desktop around 2005, and migrated my servers early the next year. In 2007 I began emailing small modifications to contributors. Soon thereafter I began porting and stewarding software independently while getting many of my changes and fixes merged with the project upstreams. In 2010 was awarded commit access to FreeBSD's revision control systems (CVS and Subversion) and was officially invited to become a member of the project.
In 2010 I was asked to serve as the administrative contact for the Exaile project, helping usher a student's bid for GSoC participation.
